If you travel away from the busy center of Amsterdam and towards the south, Hotel Okura will be hard to miss— a large pinkish building right on the canal, Hotel Okura is big and square a bit at odds with Amsterdam architecture. And while this five-star luxury hotel has plenty to offer, what truly sets it apart are its great restaurants, with 80 chefs at work every day in this one hotel alone. Of Okura’s restaurants, Ciel Bleu Restaurant is particularly notable, having won two Michelin stars.
Hotel Okura’s location in the south of Amsterdam take visitors a bit too far out to enjoy the action of the city. However, its relatively isolated location gives Ciel Blue Restaurant (located on the 23rd floor) incredible panoramic views over Amsterdam. This combined with the professional, knowledgeable staff, impressive wine list, and quiet candle light make Ciel Blue the perfect place for a romantic meal for two.
But a meal at Ciel Bleu is about more than a nice view— Ciel Bleu is known world wide for its incredible menu, and is ranked as one of the top fifty restaurants in the Netherlands, having won its second Michelin star in late 2008. Ciel Bleu’s cuisine is considered “creative cuisine”; basing their cooking on the French method, Ciel Bleu’s chefs combine seasonal products in innovative ways to create amazing haute cuisine.
Prices, of course, are quite high here, but the food and service make a meal at Ciel Bleu a good value none the less. Fixed menus start at close to €70 per person, but with them comes a copious amount of food served over the course of up to four hours— this is a dinner to take time to savor. It’s also a dinner to dress for… an Amsterdam restaurant like Ciel Blue does, of course, have a dress code.
If you’d like to sample some of the best cuisine in Amsterdam from a restaurant with two Michelin stars and amazing ambiance, Ciel Bleu is definitely a great choice for a perfect night out.
