For those on a budget who are looking to stay in a quiet, charming corner of Amsterdam, the Hotel Washington might be your best option. This little hotel is located in the Museumplein area, within walking distance to the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum, and not far from Vondelpark— all that green space is just a short five-minute walk. Unlike Amsterdam city center hotels, Hotel Washington is very quiet; the streets surrounding it are beautiful residential streets without much for tourists, and the silence here is startling after the noise and bustle of the city center. The hotel itself is just another row-house on a quiet street. If not for the sign it wouldn’t be identifiable as a hotel at all.
Depending on what you choose, the rooms at Hotel Washington can range from teeny-tiny to quite comfortable, but all are a good value. On the hotel’s lower floors are the larger rooms. These are for two to four people, depending on the room, and come with their own decent-sized bathroom. As you go up, the rooms get smaller and the facilities lesser; the rooms on the top floor are tiny standard-basic rooms with one double bed and a shared bathroom. Funnily enough, the basic rooms are also the ones with wonderful large terraces with gorgeous views across Amsterdam— in good summer weather, the occupants of basic rooms spend a lot of time out here. The shared bathrooms are roomy and very clean, and with very few guests sharing them you almost never have to wait in line for your turn.
No matter what kind of room you get, Hotel Washington is one of the better values in Amsterdam hotels. The hotel is very clean, the staff is friendly, the breakfast is basic but plentiful, and the steep Dutch stairs are terribly entertaining (if hard to climb). All rooms also come with TV, safe, telephone, and wireless (wifi) internet access.
Basic double rooms at Hotel Washington start at 85€ per night, including breakfast.
