The Grey Area CoffeeShop

If you're coming to Amsterdam for the first time, you'll of course want to take a peek into one of the city's famous coffeeshops. And one of the most famous coffeeshops in all of Amsterdam is The Grey Area CoffeeShop.

Unlike more touristy places like The Bulldog Coffeshop, Grey Area isn't known for its bright neon sign and long history; it's know for the quality of its marijuana. Owned by two Americans who moved to Amsterdam because of an enthusiasm for marijuana and an alternate lifestyle, Grey Area is a teeny tiny little coffeeshop that is easy to overlook. It's often hard to get a seat there, as there are only three tables with four chairs each, and a few small stools.

Grey Area caters especially to American tourists visiting Amsterdam, who tend to flock there in droves. Jon, the owner, is generally friendly and well-informed about the products he sells, and can also give you advice about the policies of different countries when it comes to taking drugs or seeds home with you. The drinks (soft drinks only, of course, as alcohol is banned in Amsterdam Coffeehouses as of April 2007) are inexpensive at about 2.00 each, and the ambiance is generally warm and friendly, with everybody sharing and passing around. The coffeehouse is known for having some of best value marijuana in Amsterdam&emdash; the owners have a reputation for providing the very best marijuana at a reasonable price. Many also say that Grey Area sells the best hash in the city, called Grey Area Crystal, for 15.00 a gram.

Grey Area is located in the Jordaan quarter of the city, just off the Singel Canal. You'll find it close to Dam Square in the center of Amsterdam, about a three-minute walk down a narrow street to the west of the square.
