About two blocks south of Rembrandtplein in the Museum area, you'll find a gem among Amsterdam coffeeshops. Stix coffeeshop is not a place you'll probably read about in many forums or Amsterdam guides. This quiet, understated place is where the locals go to smoke.

So if you're looking for a true Dutch coffeeshop experience, Stix is the place to go. Instead of alternative lifestyle types and tourists, the first thing you'll see when you walk in the door are Dutch businessmen in suits— this makes Stix a good illustration of why Amsterdam is such a special city. That famous Dutch open-mindedness is for everybody— and anybody can take part.

Stix Coffeeshop was created as a place for people to hang out and relax after work. In place of the rather insistent "coffeeshop ambiance" you'll find in other Amsterdam coffeeshops, Stix is rather plain. Dark wooden tables, big stained glass windows, and simple booths make this place almost unrecongnizable as a coffeeshop. And instead of thumping house music or psychedelic rock playing in most coffeeshops in Amsterdam, Stix is filled with cool and relaxing jazz. It's a laid back place in every sense to the word, and is probably one of the best examples of a "true" coffeeshop experience in Amsterdam— this unshowy place was not made for tourists.

That said, one of the best things about Stix is how welcoming they are to tourists when they do come in. There's no need to feel out of place here, as the staff is friendly and open to offering advice to those who need it. Their marijuana menu is also one of the best in Amsterdam, and the prices are reasonable. Many who come in simply buy and leave; others decide to stay and hang out in this quiet, clean, and welcoming Amsterdam coffeeshop. Please keep in mind, however, that this is a place popular with locals, and the Dutch are relatively quiet in general. So don't come in yelling and noisy, and you'll be sure to be welcomed.
