Amsterdam Coffee Shops

Basjoe Coffeeshop

Basjoe Coffeeshop

Though at first glance, Amsterdam can seem postcard-perfect (even a little monotonous-perfect), the truth is that there's more variety in this city than meets the eye. Every site, every hotel, every restaurant has a personality all its own. As does every Amsterdam coffeeshop and many of them aren't particularly friendly or welcoming.

Basjoe Coffeeshop is different. While most of Amsterdam's coffeeshops won't treat you with outright rudeness, the coffeeshop in which you'll find consistently friendly service is a rarity. Basjoe is one of these hard-to-find Amsterdam coffeeshops.

With its slightly out of the way location (at the intersection of two of Amsterdam's quieter canals and with a great view of the Zuiderkerk clock tower), Basjoe is easy to overlook. It has a few tables on a terrace outside which fill up quickly in summer, but otherwise most visitors tend to walk right past. But if you're looking for a coffee shop where you'll get great, friendly service and the best hash and weed in town, it's worth searching out Basjoe.

The man who runs Basjoe is called James, and he tends to treat his clients a bit like family (be sure to sit at the counter if you want to have a chat and a laugh). Instead of a dismissive glance and a quick "what do you want," James takes the time to make recommendations to and crack jokes with his customers. The rest of the staff is friendly, too they provide a great table service (rare in Amsterdam coffeeshops), serve up terrific smoothies of all kinds, and earn the name "coffeeshop" by serving one of the best cups of coffee in all of Amsterdam. Plus, their weed and hash is considered some of the very best in the city.

Basjoe is the perfect coffeeshop for long-time smokers and amateurs alike. James and his staff do their best to make their customers comfortable, and if you don't know what you'd like to order, all you have to do is ask.

Re: Basjoe Coffeeshop

Basjoe Coffeeshop

We made an ADULT family vacation to Amsterdam in May 2008 and found Basjoe to be our favorite! Working off a list of the highest rated coffee shops we found online, we found ourselves back to see James at Basjoe daily! While in Amsterdam we visited the "Anne Frank House" (30 minutes), the "Van Gogh Museum" (30 minutes) and walked in front of the
"Rijksmuseum" (5 minutes) and visited every coffeshop in the city! (4 days)

You'll love James and Basjoe!
