Amsterdam Coffee Shops
Barney's Coffeeshop
It's hard to know which coffeeshops to visit when there are more of them in Amsterdam than you could go to in a lifetime. So what makes Barney's Coffeeshop in Amsterdam worth a look? Mainly, breakfast.
It probably comes as a surprise that one of the main draws of this Haarlemmerstraat coffeeshop is its breakfast. But as one of the only Amsterdam coffeeshops that opens at eight o'clock in the morning, it's one of the best ones to stop in for an early breakfast. And, if you want, an early smoke. Their food menu (and marijauan menu) is extensive, and they serve a full english breakfast. The perfect thing to put an end to a hangover, breakfast is served until four in the afternoon. They also have lots of vegetarian and vegan options, and have all the morning papers on the tables you can start your day in Amsterdam with a good breakfast and a few quiet minutes with the morning paper. It does get very busy, however, so expect to wait if you're not willing to share a table. You will also be expected to stay in your seat unless visiting the dealer's counter they try to keep the narrow path between tables free for the wait staff.
Ten years or so ago, Barney's Coffeeshop was popular mostly with the locals. Now, since the owner has spent a lot of time and effort on the marijuana products he sells, the place is also popular with tourists and expats. In fact, Barney's coffeehouse, with its English-language papers and English breakfast, is something of an expat paradise. It's a bit more commercial than it used to be, and ambiance and quality have suffered a bit. But it's still one of the only breakfast coffeeshops in Amsterdam, and has even opened two more locations in the city: Barney's Brasserie just up the street, and Barney's Lounge, which is across town.
